SPRING CLEANING

With temperatures regularly in the 80’s so far in February, Spring has definitely come early this year.  With spring we start to see longer days and flowers start to bloom again.  Springtime also is a time for cleaning.  After cold and wet weather through the winter months, we now have an opportunity to get back outside and work on projects.

Spring is when your plant life begins to wake up from its winter dormancy.  Just like when we wake up every morning, your plants are probably hungry!  Spring fertilizer for both plants and lawns gives them the nutrients they need to establish new growth and put on new roots.  Early establishment and proper feeding now will help all your plants prepare for the heat and drought that inevitably will come later in the year.  This is also a good time to address weed control for both your flower beds and lawn.  Local garden centers, feed stores and even big box stores can provide you with options for pre-emergent (keep them from coming up) and post emergent (oh no they are here, help me kill them now!) weed control products.  In your flower bed areas, it is a good time to apply mulch both as a weed barrier and a moisture retention aid.  A good mulching is always a benefit to both the look and the health of the bed.

Not only are plants and trees waking up from a winter nap but, bugs as well.  As the soils warm up, keep an eye out for pest issues.  Whether in your garden, lawn or house bugs are rarely welcome.  There are several techniques for removing and preventing pests, ranging from chemical applications to proper caulking and screening around your house.  There are helpful websites from local experts that can give advice on pest control in your home and garden.

Coming out of winter months, when the sun is low on the horizon, we often see issues with various molds and mildews forming on houses.  Northern exposures of houses tend to get these issues more based simply on the lower amount of sunlight exposure to the surface of the house.  Check your eves, chimneys, siding, fences and window frames to see if you may have some discoloration due to these issues.  There are several remedies including bleach solutions, pressure washing, as well as, both organic and synthetic solutions to help treat and prevent these issues in the future.  Do your research on which option will work best for you.

On a final note, Spring is the time of year when we tend to see strong storms in this part of Texas.  Take a look at your gutters and trees.  Keeping your gutters clear will help water flow properly from your house and minimize issues on the drip edge of your house.  Proper pruning is healthy for your tree and will allow air and moisture to move through the canopy making it less likely that you will have damage to people or property from a downed tree.  Removing dead wood also keeps a tree healthy.

Spring is a great time of year to get out and enjoy the outdoors.  It is also the time we begin hearing lawn mowers and weed eaters as maintenance season comes upon us once more.  Whether you do your own maintenance or contract it out to a professional, thanks for working to keep our neighborhood looking in excellent condition.
